Parson's Challenge

Portrait of Grace

This piece is a portrait of my little sister at her 6th birthday party. I used oil paints in this piece because this material is so fluid and smooth. I wanted this to represent how most children go with the flow and are made happy from the smallest of things. I wanted to exhibit how children are genuinely happy most of the time and do not have as much to worry about, compared to adults. Even when something bad does happen in children’s lives it is not as hard for them to find happiness and put what happened behind them. Also, children are more sheltered from the bad aspects of our society. Whether this is good or bad, children just have it easier to focus on the good in their lives. Even though I am not yet an adult or even close to facing the hardships and pressures of living in this world, I still can understand that life will never be as easy as it was when I was six. However, it makes me happy to look at my sister and find that she does not have a care in the world.

Sitting Amongst Leaves

This piece was done with the use of acetate paper and acrylic paints. I was inspired to make a layered piece such as this from the artist Mark Weinstein. However, he uses plexi-glass instead of acetate paper. I used the layering technique because I wanted to show that there is always something different and unexpected below the surface. The foreground is an image of my little sister sitting down in a pile of leaves. Below that is a background of foliage and behind that is a mixture of mainly dare colors with a few pops of bright colors. Even though children’s minds are not as developed as those of adults, children are still constantly thinking. On the surface the child looks calm and serene, but it’s only until one goes below the surface that true thoughts are revealed. The girl could be thinking of a number of things, like why the leaves are so many different colors and no two are exactly alike. The thoughts can be calm ones, or they could be happy or darker. Unless one can see past the surface, no one would ever really know.

Gracie’s Mirror

The purpose of this piece is to show how people change and mature, as they grow older. The leotard the young girl is wearing and the black cocktail dress on the mannequin next to her symbolize this. This shows how people move on from one thing to another throughout their lives. It exemplifies how there are numerous phases that a person goes through that all individually play an important role throughout a person’s life. The young girl, my little sister, is also making a different pose in the mirror than she is in real life. In real life she is poised and well composed. However, the girl in the mirror is almost poking fun at the real girl. Although people grow older and move on to other interests and activities, there will always remain a little bit of the child everyone once was. A person’s personality is always developing and maturing, but the basis of it, the inner child, will always be there. The different poses show how on the outside someone can be a mature adult, but on the inside there is still a fun-loving child.
